CAIRO - 7 September 2017: Egyptian National Basketball Team participates in 2017 Men’s AfroBasket hosted by Senegal and Tunisia from September 8 -16. Egypt’s group matches will be played in Dakar, Senegal.

Egypt plays in Group D alongside South Africa, Mozambique and the host nation, Senegal, if Egypt comes first or second in the group, the team will travel to Tunisia where the finals will be played to continue their campaign.

2017 Men’s AfroBasket was initially set to be hosted by the Republic of Congo but the country refused due to logistical issues; then FIBA Africa offered Angola to host the tournament but Angola refused because they will be carrying out their general elections at the same time, according to AfroBasket.com

In the end, FIBA Africa confirmed that Tunisia and Senegal will co-host the event for the first time in the history of the competition.

Egyptian coach, Amr Aboul Kher, seems optimistic about Egyptian participation; he said to Fiba.com, “We have good and prepared players that can face any team.”

Aboul Kher spoke about Egypt's opponents in the group saying, “Senegal is a great team; one of the best in Africa, Mozambique could be tough to beat because the players have been playing together for many years, and the coach has been with the team for a long time.”

Aboul Kher added, “We are trying to gather as much information as possible about South Africa because we do not want to be caught off guard."

Egypt won the competition five times, their last win was in 1983 in Alexandria.
