CAIRO –7 July 2017: Per Mertesacker, Arsenal captain, announced that the upcoming season will be the end of his football career, Mertesacker will take charge of Arsenal Academy after retirement. "This season I will remain fully focused on my job with the team and I am looking forward to a successful last season on the pitch.” Mertesacker told Arsenal Website.

Mertesacker, 32 years old, joined Arsenal from Werder Bremen in 2011, he remained a regular player in Arsenal squad for the last six seasons and he became the club captain in 2014. He won three FA Cup titles with Arsenal and a community shield title in 2015, Mertesacker was among the Germany squad that won the 2014 World Cup title in Brazil

Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager, talked about what Mertesacker will add to the club academy, he said “Per is an exceptional character who is a great example for young players. He is a deep thinker about the game and committed to helping players fulfill their potential. He will be an inspirational figure for everyone connected with the academy." according to ESPN.com
