The film follows Charlie (David Gulpilil), an aging Aboriginal hunter who begins to butt-heads with the “whitefella” policemen and their laws, as they encroach on his small Aborigine community. While the others are content to going along with the new laws, Charlie objects to the “nonsense” laws and wishes to go back out into the bush, Australia’s outback wilderness, the land of his ancestors. Charlie’s efforts to rebel lead him down a road paved with alcoholism and poverty as a sad fact makes itself known; this isn’t his home anymore.
“Charlie’s Country” marked a return for actor Gulpilil after being incarcerated. For his performance he was awarded the Cannes Film Festival’s ‘Un Certain Regard’ award for Best Actor.
