CAIRO - 20 July 2017: Romel Museum based in Matrouh governorate to be re-opened soon after its shut down for seven years, according to Elham Salah’s statement on Thursday, head of Museums Sector in the Ministry of Antiquities.

The museum has been shut down for renovation, which has been funded by the governorate in collaboration with the Ministry of Antiquities. The museum lies in a cave called Romel that dates back to the Romanian/Greek era.

The cave is in a shape of a sphere overlooking the beach and has been chosen by the German General Romel to be his own headquarter during World War II.

The museum depicts the time of war where thousands of tourists used to visit the museum annually to observe a unique displayed collection of weapons, ammunition, and maps used during the war, according to a statement by the governorate of Matrouh.

Matrouh governorate is also constructing a museum in collaboration with the Public Egyptian Library of Matrouh, that will display artifacts and antiquities discovered in the city along the past years.
