CAIRO - 12 June 2023: A “Cemetery of Immortals” will be built to host the remains of people with outstanding contributions to Egypt after being transferred from Old Cairo, according to a Monday presidential decree.

 

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouky to discuss the process of renovating Sayyida Nafisa and Imam Shafei areas in Old Cairo, which has included the removal of several cemeteries that held the graves of high-profile figures as well as historical artifacts and tombstones. 

 

The Cemetery of Immortals will also include include a museum for the artistic and archaeological works found in the old cemeteries, as well as the biographies of the great people whose remains have been transferred and their belongings.

 

The establishment of the new cemetery and the museum, as well as the transfer process, will be supervised by a committee headed by Madbouly and will include all concerned authorities, specialized archaeologists and engineering consulting offices to assess alternatives to some transfers and come up with an integrated vision and recommendations that will be announced to the public before the first day of July 2023.
