Japanese minister visit Grand Egyptian Museum

CAIRO- 5 JULY 2017: Hirokazu Matsuno, the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Japanese Ambassador in Egypt, Takehiro Kagawa, visited the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza to follow up on the refurbishment inside the museum.

Matsuno headed to the Khufu boat project to follow up on the project's renovation work. The work consists of pulling out the rest of the boat from the ground, fully refurbishing it safely, and reassuring it’s transportation to the Grand Egyptian Museum as its permanent location.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to partially open in 2018 as the largest archeological museum in the world. After receiving entries from more than 82 countries and 1’557 entries in 2003, the largest archeological competition in the world, the judges picked 20 finalists.

The winning design was by Heneghan Peng from Dublin, Ireland and the project is mainly funded by Japan. It started in 2002 and has been under construction ever since.
