CAIRO – 23 August 2017: Production from Giza and Fayoum fields in the North Alexandria Concession will start by the end of 2018, Minister of Petroleum Tarek El-Molla stated.

During a meeting with Thomas Rappuhn, the CEO of Germany’s oil and gas exploration company DEA Group, Molla said that Egypt is working to tighten gap between production and consumption through proceeding with new gas projects.

Rappuhn praised progress made on North Alexandria concession and the huge support from the government to it.

The first phase of the North Alexandria concession started in May when Taurus and Libra gas fields started production, expected to save Egypt $1 billion in gas imports.

North Alexandria concession is part of the West Nile Delta (WND) project, which involves the development of gas and gas condensate fields located within that region and the West Mediterranean Deepwater Concession, approximately 65-85km (40.4-52.8 miles) off the coast of Alexandria.

BP is the operator of WND, holding a 60 percent stake in the North Alexandria concession and an 80 percent stake in the West Mediterranean Deepwater concession. The German company RWE DEA is the second partner in the project.

The project’s memorandum was signed in 2015 during the Egypt Economic Development Conference (EEDC), specifying the operation of phase one in the last quarter of 2017 and the inauguration of phase two in 2019.

Reserves of the WND project are nearly 5 trillion cubic feet of gas and about 55 million barrels of condensates and the capacity of phase one is 700 million cubic feet per day, according to Molla.
