CAIRO - 5 November 2023: Egypt raises the local wheat procurement price from LE 1500 to LE 1600 per wheat ardeb which accounts for almost 150 kilograms for the next harvest season.

In April, the government also increased the the wheat procurement price from local farmers from LE 1000 to LE 1500 per ardeb.

The statement said that raising the price “is to encourage Egyptian farmers and motivate them to grow and supply this strategic crop in the upcoming harvest season.”

Earlier this year, the Egyptian cabinet also announced that the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade purchased 3.8 million tons of wheat from local farmers during the harvest season which started in April and ended on 31 August.

Earlier in October, the Chairman of the Farmers Syndicate Abdel Rahman Abou Sadam indicated in a press statement that the surface area to be cultivated with wheat in the upcoming season, taking place in November and December, had been estimated to be four million feddans. He also pointed out that Egypt currently grows only 50 percent of its consumption of wheat.
