CAIRO - 26 July 2023: Meta announced on Tuesday that the WhatsApp Channels feature will launch in Egypt and six other countries, including Chile, Malaysia, Morocco, Ukraine, Kenya, and Peru.

To promote the usage of Channels features in Egypt, WhatsApp is working on different partnerships with government bodies, media companies, and sport teams to use channels as a platform to share announcements, information, pictures, etc. with their audience.

Meta’s head of Public Policy for North Africa Shaden Khallaf stated that Egypt is a suitable environment for creators and innovation and that “the launch of WhatsApp Channels will provide people and organizations here with early access to a new way to share information with Egypt’s fast-growing WhatsApp community.”

The launch of Channels will benefit its Egyptian users, which according to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology are about 51.45 million active users, in reaching a wider audience, sharing information securely, and following channels of interest.

The Channels is a one-way broadcast message tool, which will be under a new tab on the app called updates. The new feature allows the sharing of texts, photos, videos, stickers, and polls to an unlimited number of followers.

To ensure security and privacy, the chats will be stored for 30 days on WhatsApp servers, followers can’t be added to the broadcast list without consent, and the channel chat will be separated from the private chat section.
