CAIRO - 26 July 2023: The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, released a report that stated that the Egyptian fish production hit 2 million tons, marking a rate of 85 percent self-sufficiency.

The report stated that Egypt’s fish production ranks first in Africa, sixth globally, and third in tilapia production; and shows an expected rise in export rates, with national projects to operate in full capacity.

To support the fishing industry, the government established the Lake Protection and Fish Wealth Development Authority to regulate and facilitate the industry. In addition, the government is equipping fishing boats with tracking devices, for a cost of LE 30,000 per boat.

Furthermore, the “Bar Aman” governmental initiative was launched to sustain fishermen by providing them with supplies and facilitating the work process for them. The initiative has benefited 42,000 fishermen so far.

To increase fish wealth in lakes, multiple shrimp and marine fish hatcheries have been established with strict measures to ensure prevention of fishing in the hatcheries. Meanwhile, other hatcheries are being reinforced and developed to increase production from 80 to 100 million freshwater hatchlings in Gerf Hussein, Abu Simbel, Toshka, and Sahari.

The report also stated the government’s approval of the launch of 21 marine areas, nine in the Red Sea and 12 in the Mediterranean. Logistical areas of marine cages have been placed on the investment map of the General Authority for Investments and Free Zones.

Multiple projects and enhancement plans are also at work to develop lakes in Manzala, Burullus, Idku, and Bardawil. The government aims to commit to supporting the growing fish industry in Egypt and increase production to fit the Egyptian citizens.
