Qatar, Turkey are destroying the region: Syrian amb

CAIRO – 6 November 2017: The Syrian Ambassador to Spain Milad Atteya attacked the international powers supporting Qatar and Turkey, warning against their destructive role in the Middle East and Europe because of backing and financing terrorism.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Atteya stated that both countries have supported terrorist groups causing turmoil in his country since 2011 upon the instructions of the United States.

“Eighty-nine terrorists of different nationalities were recruited by the intelligence bodies of the United States and its allies, and trained in Turkish camps. Then, they crossed the Turkish-Syrian borders extending on 800 kilometers. Turkey is the main reason behind the blood shed in Syria for six years,” the ambassador said.

Atteya continued that the turmoil causing hundreds of thousands of casualties and the demolishment of infrastructure started as demonstrations by civilians who demanded political, economic, and social reforms; resulting in the government taking the necessary measures to achieve those calls. “However, the situation escalated fast,” the ambassador added.

“Qatar and Turkey do not want peace and stability in the region which has been evident in their movements throughout the last 40 years,” Atteya stated, accusing the United States of founding the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq in 2006 in order to destabilize the region and its governments.

The ambassador asserted that the goal of these terrorists is to ruin the infrastructure that is the main economic engine in any country, in order to turn Syria into a failed state “like what they did in Iraq, Libya, Somalia and others.”

“We are close to the end of the war on terrorism imposed on Syria. The Syrian people are optimistic about the future. The war would completely end when foreign powers stop supporting terrorist groups in Syria, and when Turkey closes its borders,” Atteya stipulated.

As for the country’s plans for refurbishment and reconstruction, the ambassador said that the government is focusing on the education and healthcare sectors; highlighting that 3,500 schools were demolished. He added that the government is deploying efforts to develop other sectors in parallel as well.
