Egyptian band Salalem performing with Canadian sensation NEeMA
By Nadine El Sayed
Combine our funny Salalem with the soulful Canadian artist NEeMA and you have a perfect concert to quench all tastes — and to make it all the more tempting, you can see them for free.NEeMA, a rising Canadian star of Egyptian and Lebanese descent, is going back to her roots, performing two concerts in Cairo on February 4 and 7 with Salalem our self-proclaimed “Six piece-Egyptian pop band singing sarcastic lyrics with a groovy twist.” NEeMA’s music mixes folk, jazz and a bit of pop; and her latest album Watching You Think is produced with Leonard Cohen and Pierre Marchand, who has worked with musicians the likes of Sara McLachlan. With a rich travel experience, NeeMA’s creative muses are many: She has spent time with the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa and the Tribal Elders of isolated Wekweti in Canada. The singer's music surely reflects her experiences, and her musical prayer Masi was a hit in Canada. So expect some soothing, touching and emotional tunes. Check out her music on: http://www.neema.ca/videos Salalem, on the other hand, is that funny Egyptian guy next door; but the band's music and messages go beyond the instant smile they manage to put on their audience’s faces. The band formed in 2004 to make music that is both catchy and delivers a message. Without settling into any specific genre, Salalem's music is often sarcastic with a humorous twist. The band's repertoire includes original songs and their takes on retro tunes such as Ahmed Zaki’s “Kaboria” (Crab) or Tholathy Adwa’ El Masrah’s “Bos Shouf Min” (Look Who it is). Watch Salalem on their official YouTube channel:http://www.youtube.com/salalemonline If soul meets funk isn’t diverse enough for you, perhaps the concert venues will fit the bill. For the culture guru in you, the February 4 concert is 8pm at the Cairo Opera House's Open Air Theater, conveniently heated against the chilly night air. The show moves to the Cairo Jazz Club on February 7, 10pm, to funk it up a bit. Hosted by the Canadian Embassy in Egypt, both concerts are free to the public, as long as you pick up one of the invitation cards available at the Canadian embassy, the Opera House or the Jazz Club. Space is limited and invites are going quickly.
