Germany adheres to Berlin path to address Libyan crisis

CAIRO – 19 August 2020: On August 17, the Libyan situation witnessed Germany’s movement with the arrival of Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to Tripoli, where he said, “We are witnessing a deceptive calm in Libya at present,” stressing that Germany adheres to the Berlin path to resolve the crisis in Libya.
 
 
The German foreign minister pointed out that the armed escalation in Libya poses a terrible danger. "We reject the armed escalation and foreign interference in Libya," he added,pointingout that direct discussions must be started between the warring parties.
 
 
Maas discussed the issue of the continued flow of weapons, and the establishment of a demilitarized zone in the vicinity of the city of Sirte. It is expected that Maas will visit the UAE, after the end of his meetings in the Libyan capital.
 
 
In the same context, Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, KhalifaHaftar, discussed on Monday with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer and his accompanying delegation the humanitarian situation in Libya.
 
 
Haftar said in a statement that the meeting discussed the humanitarian situation that the country is going through and some areas affected by the ongoing war against terrorism and the militias affiliated with the Turkish invasion.
 
 
He explainedthat the meeting, which was conducted at Haftar's office at the General Command, also tackledways of humanitarian cooperation and thehelpthe International Committee of the Red Cross can offer Libya in the current situation.
 
 
For his part, Ahmed al-Mesmari, a spokesman for the Libyan National Army, said that Turkey is training thousands of terrorist mercenaries in Syria to fight in desert areas in preparation for their transfer to Libyan lands.
 
 
Mismari added, in a telephone interview, that Turkish President RecepTayyipErdogan is using the period of the ceasefire armistice to train terrorist mercenaries.
 
 
Regarding the visit of the Qatari and Turkish defense ministers to Libya, Mismari affirmed that the Libyan National Army monitors all Turkish movements on Libyan territories and that any Turkish attempt to transfer the battle to other regions will be confronted.
 
 
The spokesperson further clarifiedthat the Turkish side sought to transfer the battle from the eastern Mediterranean to the Libyan territories to distract the international community from its exploration of gas in the eastern Mediterranean.
 
 
On the other hand, Mismary said that the Libyan armed forces have been assigned certain tasks that target liberating Libya from invaders and militias.
 
The spokesman for the Libyan National Army added, during a press conference, "We present all our information about Qatari support and financing terrorists to the international community."
