53% of total reported cholera cases in Yemen are women

CAIRO – 23 June 2017: The World Health Organization WHO, announced in its weekly update on Thursday that the Yemini Ministry of Public Health and Population has recorded 37,079 suspected cholera cases from June 13-19. Among these cases, 196 cases associated with deaths.

According to WHO, Cholera is endemic in Yemen as it affected around 268 districts in 20 governorates across Yemen. The WHO also reports that Yemen has experienced a surge in cholera cases since April 27, 2017. More than half of the suspected cases are reported from four governorates: Amanat Al-Asimah, Al-Hudeideh, Hajjah and Amran.




A cumulative total of 185,301 suspected cases of cholera and 1233 associated deaths have been recorded since this outbreak in October 2016. WHO reports that the overall case-fatality rate is 0.7 percent and that it is higher among people aged over 60.

The WHO sex segregated data show that 53 percent of total reported cases are women. While age segregated data report the 18 percent of total cases are children below the age of 15.

The WHO and the King Salman Centre for Humanitarian Aid and Relief agreed to provide around $8.3 million through health partners in Yemen to support 7.3 million people in 13 priority governorates with life-saving health services, medical supplies and cholera case management efforts.
