254 young leaders applied for Nasser Fellowship during 1st registration days

CAIRO - 11 May 2019: High turnout has been witnessed by young applicants to join the Nasser Fellowship for African Leadership in the first days of registration, according to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.


The Nasser Fellowship for Transformational Leadership, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Central Administration of the Parliament and Civic Education - African Youth Bureau), has experienced a high registration rate by young people from the African continent, during the first registration days, 254 young leaders from 41 African countries

The percentages are as follows: Algeria (1.6%) - Angola (1.6%) - Benin (0.8%) - Botswana (0.8%) -Burundi (1.6%) -Cap-Vert (0.4%) - Cameroon (1.6%) - Chad (2.8%) - Democratic Republic of Congo (1.2%) -Republic of Congo (Congo Brazaville) (0.8%) -Djibouti (0.4%) - Egypt (5.9%) - Eritrea (0.4%) - Eswatini (0.4%) - Ethiopia (3.1%) - Gambia (2%) - Ghana (3.5%) - Guinea (0.8%) - Kenya (3.2%) - Liberia (4.3%) - Libya (1.6%) -Madagascar (0.4%) - Malawi (6.7%) - Mali (1.6%) - Mauritius (0.4%) - Morocco (0.4%) - Mozambique (0.8%) - Namibia (0.4%) - Nigeria (2.25%) - Rwanda (1.6%) - Sierra Leone (3.1%) - Somalia ( 2.8%) -South Africa (1.2%), South Sudan (1.2%) -Sudan (2%) - Tanzania (2.8%) -Togo (0.4%) - Tunisia (3.1%) - Zambia (3.5%) - Zimbabwe (2%).

Deadline for applications is May 15, the admitted candidates will be contacted from May 13 as a first phase.

The Fellowship, to be implemented June 8-22 at the Al-Gezirah Civic Education Center, targets around 100 young leaders from the African Union member States, as Decision-makers in the Governmental Sector, Executive Leaders in the Private Sector -Youth in Civil Society - Heads of National Councils for Youth - Faculty members at Universities - Researchers in Strategic Research Centers - Members of Trade Unions - Journalists and Media Professionals.

This Fellowship is one of the mechanisms to implement the "One Million by 2021" initiative to train one million young Africans by 2021, recently launched by the AU Commission on Science, Technology and Human Resources in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.

The aim of the Fellowship is to transfer the long-established Egyptian experience in national institution-building and to create a new generation of young African transformational leadership whose vision is in line with the orientations of Egypt's presidency of the African Union, and which is committed to serving the objectives of African unity through integration,
training, capacity building, as well as organizing meetings for Africa's most influential leaders on the continent.

This is implemented within the framework of the keenness of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, chaired by Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, to play its mandated role in strengthening the role of African youth through providing them with all forms of support, rehabilitation and training, as well as empowering them in leadership positions and benefiting from their abilities and ideas, in implementation of what was endorsed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during the World Youth Forum, as well as his resolution regarding 2019 to be the year of education.

It should be noted that Nasser Fellowship is the first (African-African) fellowship to target young African executive leaders in various fields of specialization within their communities, as well as one of the critical mechanisms of empowerment of the African transformational leadership endorsed by the African Union’s Agenda (in text) in order to stimulate and promote African values through self-reliance, solidarity, hard work, collective prosperity, building on the African successes, experiences and best practices for the formulation of the African model of transformation and development. The Fellowship is also one of the mechanisms of "harnessing the demographic dividend through investment in youth" in conjunction with the assumption by Egypt of the presidency of the African Union in 2019.
