CAIRO - 2 October 2018: Cairo criminal court decided on Tuesday to adjourn to October 13 the trial of 213 members of Ansar Bait al Maqdis over accusations of committing 54 terrorist crimes.

The defendants are facing several charges including murder of police officers and civilians, an assassination attempt targeting former interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim and bombings of some security facilities in a number of governorates topped by the buildings of the security directorates in Cairo, Daqahlia and South Sinai.

The late attorney general Hisham Barakat, had referred the defendants to criminal court over the end of their interrogation by the higher state prosecution which revealed that the terrorists received military training at the camps of Ezzeldin el Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Hamas Movement.

Investigations also revealed that they planned to target ships passing through the Suez Canal.

Ansar Bait Al maqdis is a militant group that has been operational in North Sinai, after pledging allegiance in 2014 to the regional radical militant group known as "Islamic state".

The group has claimed responsibility of several attacks in North Sinai.

In 2015, the Cairo Criminal Court designated the group as a terrorist organization following a request from the prosecutor General.
