CAIRO – 29 May 2018: The deputy head of Sohag Airport was arrested on Monday, May 28 due to his attempt to smuggle drugs to Kuwait with one of the travelers.

Accordingly, the chairman of the Egyptian Airports Company ordered for the deputy head’s suspension from his position pending investigations, until he is proven innocent or guilty.

Earlier, the airport authorities received information about an attempt by a senior official at Sohag Airport to smuggle 10,000 tablets of drugs to Kuwait using one of the travelers.

After arresting the suspects, both of them confessed to cooperating to smuggle the drugs. According to the airport official’s statements, his mission was to get the drugs into the airport, taking benefit of being an official who isn’t submitted to examination. The traveler’s mission was to get the drugs out of the country to Kuwait.

An investigation was opened and the airport official was suspended until further notice.

In April, EgyptAir, the flag carrier airline of Egypt, announced that two weekly flights from Kuwait City to Sohag would operate regularly on Fridays and Sundays.
