CAIRO – 8 January 2018: Egypt and Jordan have applied the technology of issuing electronic work permits to eliminate the employment brokers phenomenon in both countries, which will provide real statistics on the number of Egyptians working abroad.

Egypt's Minister of Manpower Mohamed Saafan said on Monday that he delivered a notice to his Jordanian counterpart Ali Thaher al-Ghazawi about a protocol signed between the ministry and Jordan's General Security Directorate to simplify the recruitment and employment procedures regarding foreign workers.

As a result of the new law that has been implemented by Jordan, Saafan called on Egyptians not to travel to Amman for the purpose of work unless they have all the needed papers and electronic permits.

This new law, according to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Manpower on Monday, will eliminate the employment brokers phenomenon and their abuse of workers abroad completely.

Egypt is considering signing other similar protocols with other countries, along with Jordan, to allow issuing electronic work permits to facilitate the procedures and control illegal practices in this regard.

According to media outlets, Egyptians in Jordan have been suffering as a result of the widely-known sponsorship system for workers abroad (al- kafeel system).

Eight hundred workers were reported to be deported from Jordan to Egypt during 2016, while 600,000 workers currently face the risk of being deported at any given minute.
