Ten tips on how to make your cat happy, healthy and obedient.
By Rana Kamaly
I happen to adore animals, as you might have noticed by now. For now, I only have a cat because I don’t have enough space for man’s perfect best friend. But soon enough I will have a beautiful dog, cat and lots of birds that I am going to completely spoil and make the happiest, healthiest and most perfect pets that can be.
Until the time comes when I do get my own little zoo, I have been focusing my animal-loving energy on researching how to make my future pets the happiest and healthiest that can be. For now, here are my tips for dog owners.
Of course, food, water, good hygiene, regular checkups and convenient shelter are essentials for any living being, so I don’t need to go into details on those issues.
How to make your cat happy?
1. Listen to your cat. You may be able to do that through focusing on his and yours body language. I know for some people this might be disgusting but when your cat licks you for instance, it is the ultimate sign of trust and affection. This means he considers you part of his family, like a mother cat cleaning her kittens. There are many signs to show the cat is anxious, happy or nervous and you need to learn that, the internet is full of information oncats body language so start brushing up on your reading.
2. Communicate. Training and communication isn’t just for dogs, cats can quickly learn your moods, orders and signs as well. Each cat is different but if you keep certain tones and gestures consistent for the cat to associate it with different situations, he will start to understand you for a smoother relation. Also, give him a name and make him learn it by repeating it for instance when it’s feeding or treat time for the cat to associate it with something good.
3. Pet your cat as much as you can. Petting has been proved beneficial for both your and your cat’s health. Studies have proven it helps lower both your blood pressures and eliminate stress. It will also help you bond and form your own little routine. My cat knows that I pet her before bed so she comes running and starts circling around my legs to carry her up and pet her until she sleeps beside me. Rubbing your head against your cat’s will help you win extra points with him, that’s what a mother cat does to her kittens. Pet the cat under the chin and when he makes that vibrating sound, straighten or curls his tail towards the end, you know you’re doing it right.
4. Keep him entertained while away. In Egypt most cats are safer indoors, so it isn’t a good idea to let her out in the yard when you’re away. But if you will be out for the day then make sure your cat has a toy to play with or another cat to keep him company. But make sure the two cats are well familiarized, kittens might upset older cats, so when introducing two cats, make sure you’re around for the first few hours to keep the play nice. Keep soft classical music playing while you’re out — yes, your cat enjoys a little Mozart too. Do not keep a talk show on for instance as the cat might think someone else is home and turns the house upside down trying to find him.
5. Never de-claw an outdoor cat. They need their claws for protection against other animals. It is also not advisable to let your cats out unsupervised for long periods, they might stray, hurt themselves or simply feel lonely.
6. Make sure they have something to play with. To avoid ruining your new leather recliner, make sure your car has something else to claw on. It also keeps the cat busy and out of trouble when you’re around or away. Play with your cat, playing isn’t for dogs only, you can drag a ball and have him chase it or just play around with something as simple as a ball of string.
7. Let them see outside. Cats do not go out as often as dogs do, so make sure they can see the outside world from time to time, even through a window. That way they aren’t feeling trapped and they won’t panic to see a car when you take them out.
8. Keep the liter box clean. This is essential for your cat’s health and your house’s hygiene. Clean it at least daily and change it at least every 10 days. Signs that the box needs cleaning is when the cat stops using it and makes her business besides the box instead or it starts to smell.
9. Neuter, spay or mate your cat. You should know early on whether you are planning to let your cat mate or not. If you are not, then you are better off spaying or neutering your cat  as early as possible, it can be done when they are still kittens. This will help adjust their behavior, keep them from straying and improve their health. If you are planning to mate them, make sure your cat doesn’t get pregnant too often as it might be bad for her and the kittens’ health. Don’t breed your cat before she is one year old and don’t let her mate for at least two months after she delivers.
10. Cats are hunters, accept this. Your cat will want to hunt, it is in their instincts — yes, even your sweet little fur ball. So when he comes back with a bird in his mouse and proudly lays it on your lap, know that this is a sign of appreciation, the cat is giving you his booty. So it isn’t fair to punish him for following his instinct, simply try to divert their attention when you feel they are eyeing a prey and keep them out of  mice and birds’ reach.
