Cairo – 28 February 2017 - Egypt can produce 90 GW of electricity from renewable sources, since it has the largest capacity in wind energy in the MENA region and North Africa, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker said on Monday, according to

Al Borsa

.

In a conference organized by the Mediterranean Energy Observatory to promote a future of sustainable energy in Egypt, Shaker said the world is facing challenges that require more attention in regard to sustainable energy.

Shaker discussed the challenges faced by the energy sector in Egypt, especially fuel shortages. “Several measures have been taken since 2014 to allow imports in order to face a shortage of fuel necessary to operate the stations,” Shaker said.

“Once the sector succeeded to overcome the critical stage, it has moved into another phase to develop sustainability. This phase aims to ensure a secure power supply, sustainability, institutional improvement of the electricity sector, the development of the electricity and gas markets, as well as developing the legislations,” Shaker added.
