CAIRO – 25 August 2017: Iraqi armed forces penetrated defense lines of the Islamic State (IS) and announced on Friday they had taken Tal Afar city center, in attempts to restore the whole city.

More than 50 percent of the city of Tal Afar in Nineveh governorate held by IS was recaptured, commander of the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) elite units Abdul Ghani al Asadi said. The restored lands include twelve villages and Al-Khadraa district in south of Tal Afar.

The battle for fully liberating Tal Afar may take only several days, Asadi noted.
