CAIRO – 8 April 2024: Preliminary hearings began at the International Court of Justice [ICJ] on Monday in a case seeking to end German and other military aid to Israel based on allegations that Berlin is facilitating genocide and violations of international law in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

While the case brought by Nicaragua focuses on Germany’s military aid, it indirectly targets the Israeli military campaign in Gaza.

The representative of Nicaragua said in his speech before ICJ, that the evidence of violations of international humanitarian law regarding genocide in Palestine is clear, continuing: “We call on Germany to stop all forms of support for Israel because of its practices against the Palestinian people.”

He added: "The Palestinian people are exposed to the most heinous types of crimes by Israel, and the reality that Israel is trying to impose on the Palestinian people must not continue, noting that Germany is responsible for the genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people."

The ongoing Israeli war since October 7 has resulted in over 33,000 fatalities, nearly 76,000 injuries, and extensive damage to Gaza's infrastructure.

Israel has disregarded global calls for a cessation of the conflict in Gaza, despite a UN Security Council resolution passed in late March, which demanded an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan.

In recent weeks, Cairo, along with Doha and Paris, has hosted multiple rounds of talks with mediators attempting to broker an agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Efforts to secure a truce before Ramadan were unsuccessful, and with Eid Al-Fitr approaching later this week, no agreement has been reached to halt or at least pause the six months of Israeli aggression in the strip.
