CAIRO – 13 March 2024: Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte said his country appreciates Egypt’s role at all levels in containing the crisis in the Gaza Strip, noting that the situation in the enclave is “tragic” and more aid must be brought in.

The result of Israel’s scheme to attack the Palestinian city of Rafah will be catastrophic, Rutte added during a press conference on Wednesday with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi at Al-Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo.

The Dutch prime minister expressed thanks to President Sisi for the warm reception.

He added that his talks with Sisi discussed at length the "conflict" between Israel and Hamas, pointing out that he is very proud of the major role Egypt has been playing since October 7.

President Sisi has proven that he has an indispensable role - logistically, humanitarianly and pivotally - in the Gaza Strip crisis, Rutte said, pointing out that Egypt now hosts nine million refugees.

“You have been able to provide humanitarian support to millions of people in Gaza after many were expelled from Gaza,” the Dutch premier addressing Sisi.

Rutte emphasized the urgent need for more aid to enter Gaza due to the “tragic situation” there, calling for the safe arrival of aid to Gazans.

The existence of a corridor for humanitarian aid by the European Union and the US is important as it provides some relief, but it is not sufficient in itself, he stressed
