CAIRO – 22 February 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry met Thursday with his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Rio De Janeiro.

Minister Shokry said that Egypt looked forward to Indonesia's support to the nomination of Khaled al-Anany to the position of the UNESCO secretary general, highlighting his qualifications and achievements.

The talks also tackled the Gaza War as there was congruence among the two sides on the importance of deterring Israeli plans to carry out a ground offensive in Palestinian Rafah in order to avoid the expansion of conflict in the region. They also agreed on the necessity of mobilizing the international community to prioritize the alleviation of the humanitarian suffering in the Strip.

In that context, the Egyptian minister expressed appreciation for the Indonesian backing to the Palestinian Cause throughout history, and for the humanitarian aid that was being provided by the Indonesian people since the start of the aggression.

In turn, the Indonesian minister lauded the vital Egyptian role in aid delivery, and brokering a ceasefire. They also agreed on continuous consultations to push forward bilateral collaboration in various fields and coordinate stances on crises of joint concern.
