CAIRO – 24 January 2024: “Before the Gaza War, 600 aid trucks used to enter the Strip daily from Egypt. Afterwards, we were able to deliver 200 trucks daily only earlier this week. The shortage in aid delivery is not Egypt’s fault. It’s a pressure mechanism by the other side,” President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said on Wednesday.

The president further underscored that Egypt would never abandon the Palestinian Cause.

President Sisi negated allegations that Egypt was involved in besieging Gaza saying, “how will I stand before God if I’m doing this. The crossing is open 24/7. The measures carried out by the other side cripple the delivery of aid. It’s a form of cornering the Strip’s residents.”

In a related context, Egypt is facing harsh conditions on its Western, Eastern, and Southern borders, President Sisi affirmed saying, “I understand the amount of economic pressure on Egyptians, the tough circumstances, and price hikes. Yet, I trust the resilience of the Egyptian people in the face of crises that impact our lives and economy.”

President Sisi highlighted that the complicated international and regional circumstances imposed major economic challenges to Egypt. He noted that Egypt lost $450 billion between 2011 and 2013 [in the aftermath of January 25 Revolution], adding that the war on terror [for eight years] had cost the country LE120 billion.

“We need to increase our USD revenues in order to fulfill needs and resolve the currency crisis. We already import $1-billion-worth of fuel and $1-billion-worth of wheat, corn and beans monthly,” the Egyptian president stated pointing out that imported staples are subsidized for millions of citizens.

The president's statements came during a ceremony held to celebrate the 72nd Police Day, where he granted the names of martyred police officers medals of honor.
