CAIRO - 21 December 2023: Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting Wednesday to review a proposal submitted by a Chinese company to utilize the water left over from seawater desalination projects to extract minerals.
 
At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister welcomed the offer submitted by the Chinese company regarding the benefiting from the water left over from seawater desalination operations through a specific technique for extracting minerals and separating them.
 
This comes in light of the expansion of seawater desalination projects during the current stage.
 
During the meeting, the head of the Suez Canal Economic Zone referred to the presentation submitted today by TEDA officials, on behalf of the Tian E company responsible for this project.
 
In turn, Chinese officials from TEDA thanked the Prime Minister for the invitation to attend this meeting, noting that the project of the “Tian E” company is one of the largest companies that extract metals from salt water waste, and pointing out their success in attracting it to the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
 
In this regard, they explained the size of the products that can be extracted from the water left over from desalination, stressing at the same time that all of these products will be intended for export, and could generate profits worth $40 million annually, adding that if the number of stations that will be included in the project increases, it would achieve a greater dollar return that could reach up to $120 million annually.
 
The Chinese officials expressed their aspiration for the Prime Minister’s support for this proposed project, so that it can be implemented quickly as soon as possible, pointing out that the technology that will be used in this project has been applied for several years in China, and does not cause any environmental damage, and that negotiations are currently being made between In order to implement other similar projects in the Gulf countries.
 
The meeting witnessed a review of a number of available seawater desalination plants that can be used to implement this project. In this regard, the components of these plants, the quantities of residual water expected from seawater desalination, the aspects of benefiting from the quantities of water resulting from desalination, and the expected economic returns were explained. After implementing this proposal.
 
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Prime Minister directed that a meeting be held in the coming days with company officials to discuss the details of this proposed project and explain the details of the technology used.
