Egyptian, Iranian foreign ministers meet on fringe of UNGA

CAIRO - 21 September 2023: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on the sidelines of the 87th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), at the headquarters of Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

The meeting tackled bilateral relations and means of promoting ties towards achieving the higher interests of both Egyptian and Iranian peoples, in accordance with the principles of mutual respect, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

The Iranian foreign minister said his country is looking forward to promoting relations with Egypt and restoring their origin path, praising the historical legacy and civilization of both countries.

He asserted that the meeting represents a crucial step towards the path of the normalization of relations.

The meeting tackled a set of regional issues, the spokesman said, noting that both sides asserted eagerness to contribute to attaining stability and boosting security in their regions.

Shoukry and his Iranian counterpart, meanwhile, agreed on maintaining contact to follow up on issues of mutual concern at the bilateral, regional and international levels.
