CAIRO - 20 September 2023: In an effort to address the escalating crisis in Sudan, foreign ministers of Sudan's neighbouring countries (Egypt, Chad, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya, and South Sudan) convened for the second time this year at the Permanent Mission of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the United Nations.

Key takeaways from the meeting:

Continued Collaboration: Stemming from the initial statement made in Ndjamena on August 7, 2023, the meeting, organized by Egypt and Chad, witnessed not only the participation of neighbouring countries but also representatives from the Arab League (AL) and the African Union’s (AU).

Roadmap Adoption: A focal point of the discussion was the roadmap crafted during the Ndjamena meeting. All nations affirmed their commitment to its provisions, highlighting the importance of collective efforts to ensure Sudan's stability and sovereignty.

Three-Pronged Focus: The roadmap centres on political, security, and humanitarian interventions. This comprehensive approach aims to navigate the complexities of the crisis effectively.

Progress Review: The ministers reviewed the steps each country has taken since the first meeting, discussing dialogues with Sudanese factions and collaborations with other international mechanisms focused on the Sudan crisis.

Next Steps Outlined: A consensus emerged regarding immediate actions. The primary objectives include achieving a lasting ceasefire in Sudan and ramping up global efforts to address the burgeoning humanitarian situation, particularly assisting nations bearing the brunt of the Sudanese refugee influx.

Future Coordination: Emphasizing continued collaboration, the ministers slated the third meeting to take place in Cairo. The exact date will soon be confirmed through diplomatic avenues, with the primary focus on assessing roadmap implementation progress.

The international community remains keenly invested in the situation, hoping that the combined efforts of Sudan's neighbours, with the support of international bodies, can pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region.
