Birth rate drops in Egypt to child born every 14 seconds

CAIRO – 16 August 2023: Head of the Population Statistics Sector at the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) Shaker al-Nagar stated in a phone-in Tuesday that the birth rate in Egypt is very high as 2,193,000 were born in 2022.

 

On average, 182,800 were born monthly, 6,008 were born daily, and 250 were born hourly, so that one was born every 14 seconds. In a related context, the official pointed out that citizens aged below 35 compose 65 percent of the population.

 

Nagar noted that 2016 was the highest given that 2.6 million were born, which means that the drop recorded in 2022 amounts to 400,000. Further, there were 602,000 deaths in the same year.

 

With regard to marriage, 929,400 contracts happened making the rate 77,500 monthly, 2,546 daily, and 106 hourly, so that a marriage occurred every 34 seconds. As for divorce, 269,800 divorces took place. The daily and hourly rates are 739 and 31, respectively. Hence, a divorce happened every two minutes.
