Health Ministry advises against excessive intake of vitamins and nutritional supplements

CAIRO - 19 July 2023: The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population advised to avoid excessive intake of vitamins and nutritional supplements in general.
 
The Ministry of Health and Population said: “Vitamins and nutritional supplements are taken to improve health; however, they are not necessarily safe for everyone.”
 
The Ministry of Health and Population stressed the need to pay attention to the harmful effects and possible interactions of excessive use of vitamins, and the Medicines Authority confirms that vitamins, like other medicines, have doses, benefits and harms when used excessively or incorrectly, noting the need to consult a pharmacist or health care provider to avoid harm.
 
The Egyptian Medicines Authority had provided some tips to avoid the side effects of excessive use of vitamins, and these tips included: 
- Take vitamins in moderate quantities, and it is preferable to take them from natural nutrients. ​
 
- Consult a doctor before starting to take any of the nutritional supplements to determine the required doses that he needs.
- Follow the necessary instructions and adhere to them when taking vitamins such as: drinking enough water.
 
- Adhere to the daily medication appointments, and follow the instructions when taking the medication with food. ​
 
- The patient must adhere to taking doses according to the doctor's instructions.
 
- Do not share medications with another patient, or suggest any doses to a patient or another person without consulting the attending physician.
 
- Doing the necessary analyzes to follow up the percentage of vitamins and minerals in the blood, especially when taking nutritional supplements that contain vitamins, the increase of which can cause severe damage.
