CAIRO – 4 March 2023: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi extended congratulations to the Nigerian government and people on Saturday on holding the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Sisi hailed the achievement as “an important step on the path of consolidating the pillars of democracy in the sisterly state of Nigeria” in a message of congratulations posted by Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy.

President Sisi also extends heartfelt congratulations to his brother Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria, wishing him success and wishing the Nigerian people continued progress and prosperity, the spokesman said.

Sisi expressed aspiration to continue joint efforts between Egypt and Nigeria in a way that meets the aspirations of their peoples toward comprehensive development as well as the aspirations of the African continent toward further stability and prosperity, the spokesman added.

Tinubu, 71, won Nigerian elections on Wednesday by 37 percent of the vote, while main opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar came second with 29 percent of the vote.

Tinubu, now the fifth president of Nigeria, served as the governor of Lagos city from 1999 to 2007.
