South Korean Son’s career with Tottenham might be in danger

CAIRO – 21 July 2018: South Korean midfielder Heung-min Son has extended his contract with Tottenham Hotspur until 2023. This period could be interrupted if the player has to fulfill the military service required by his country.

Son, 26, came to the Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and has become a key player in Mauricio Pochettino's team, along with the English striker Harry Kane and the English midfielder Dele Alli.

The South Korean has signed the new contract after his solid performance in the World Cup in Russia, where although his team, South Korea, was eliminated from the group stage, won an important victory against Germany and knocked out the 2014 World Cup winners nevertheless.

This result does not exempt Son from carrying out compulsory military service in his country, which he would have to report for duty for 23 months if he does not get the gold medal in the next Asian Games.
Son faces career danger at Tottenham if he does not achieve the final triumph in the next Asian games that will be played from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2 in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.

The law of South Korea states that any athlete who achieves an Olympic gold medal, at the Games of Asia, is exempted from military service. The midfielder is part of the list of 23 called in the South Korean team, but before joining his teammates in the fight for gold, will travel with Tottenham to the United States to play a friendly match against Roma, Barcelona and Milan.
