CAIRO – 31 May 2018: Egypt faces Colombia on Friday night at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia during their preparations for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

It is ironic that Egypt faces Colombia to prepare for the 2018 World Cup as Egypt last played Colombia during their preparations for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, marking Egypt’s last participation in the tournament.

The game was played on May 26 in 1990, 17 days before Egypt’s opening game at the tournament against Netherlands.

The game ended 1-1 where Egypt's striker, Hossam Hassan, scored Egypt’s goal at the game seconds before the half time.

In 1990, Egypt played at the group of death alongside England, Republic of Ireland and Netherlands.

They lost 1-0 to England and the other two games ended with a draw to be knocked out from the group stage.

On the other hand, Colombia played alongside West Germany, UAE and Yugoslavia.

They defeated UAE 2-0, lost 1-0 to Yugoslavia and their game against West Germany ended with a 1-1 draw.

They qualified to the second round and were knocked out after losing 2-1 to Cameroon.
