CAIRO – 23 April 2018: The students of Port Said University’s Faculty of Engineering celebrated their graduation on Thursday wearing jerseys for Liverpool’s Egyptian winger, Mohamed Salah.

“It is a special day for us and we decided to celebrate it wearing Salah’s jerseys. He is a national hero even for those who don’t follow football much,” Mahmoud Ayman, president of the student union, told Egypt Today.

The students wore Salah’s red and white shirts, and they even wore wigs and beards to look similar to the Egyptian star.

Ayman added, “The reaction was great from all the students, and the photos went viral on social media and Salah himself retweeted our photos.”

The Egyptian winger was crowned the Professional Footballers' Association’s Player of the Year award for 2017-18, as he took the Premier League by storm this season, scoring 31 goals to be the Premier League top goal scorer, five goals ahead of Tottenham Hotspurs player Harry Kane.

The Egyptian winger also led Egypt to the 2018 World Cup, ending 28 years of absence, after he scored five of Egypt’s seven goals in the qualification campaign.

Ayman said, “Salah raised our expectations for the World Cup. I think Salah can lead the national team to the quarter-finals at least.”

Egypt plays in Group A alongside Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and the host nation, Russia.
