CAIRO –12 October 2017: Egypt's previous participation in the World Cup was 27 years ago, specifically in the 1990 World Cup.

The 1990 edition of the World Cup saw the absence of many major teams, including France and Denmark.This year there are many major countries threatened by absence.

In 1990:

In the 1990 World Cup, France, Nigeria, Denmark, Morocco and Mexico missed the tournament.

France failed to qualify for the 1990 World Cup after finishing third in their group behind Yugoslavia and Scotland.

Denmark also failed to qualify after finishing second behind Romania.

Nigeria did not qualify after finishing second place behind Cameroon in the group, and Morocco was very poor in those qualifiers, finishing fourth behind Tunisia, Zambia and Zaire.

Saudi Arabia did not qualify because of finishing in the fifth place in the Asian final
qualifiers, and for the same reason Japan missed the world cup.

In 2018:

The next World Cup will also miss many of the major teams.

Algeria and Cameroon did not qualify officially after Nigeria qualified from their group.

Netherlands became officially out of the World Cup and also Chile despite the presence of Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal.

Italy will play the playoffs after being confirmed as second in their group behind Spain.

Between 1990 and 2018, Costa Rica participated for the first time in 1990 World Cup, and qualified for 2018 World Cup after a deadly goal in the minute no. 95 in Honduras.
