27 August 2017: Gianluigi Buffon, Juventus legend doesn’t like what the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) brought to football after being applied gradually to some competitions.
“They are overusing it and making mistakes, I don't like it this way, it's not good,” Buffon told reporters after Juventus’ 4-2 victory over Genoa on Saturday.
The referee used the VAR to give a penalty to Genoa from which they scored their second goal in the game. He also gave a penalty to Juventus using the same technique, this penalty helped Paolo Dybala score the equalizer for Juventus before the first half final whistle.
Buffon added, “it's something which, if used sparingly, could give us excellent results and be a good thing for football. In this way, we won't know the real value of a referee. If everyone was a little calmer and more objective, and accepted mistakes, we would accept results with more humanity.”
Buffon spoke about how VAR affected the game badly. “Another thing is that in football, it's not a penalty every time there is contact. You can't stop the game every three minutes; it makes it like water polo."
VAR is a new technique that FIFA decided to start using in the major tournaments and leagues, it is now being used in Italian and German leagues.
