Egypt’s U-20 national team, under the leadership of head coach Osama Nabih, secured a vital 1-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Egypt. The decisive goal came from Mohamed Abdallah in the 62nd minute, putting Egypt at the top of their group with 3 points, while South Africa sits in fifth place with no points.

Nabih fielded a starting lineup featuring Abdel Monem Tamer, Mohamed Hussein, Ahmed Abdeen, Abdallah Bostanji, Ahmed Kabaka, Moamen Sherif, Mohab Abdallah, Ahmed Bayoumi, Mohamed El-Sayed, Omar Hassan, and Mohamed Zallouk.

The match began with strong attacking pressure from Egypt. In the 7th minute, a loose ball inside the South African penalty area was met by Mohamed El-Sayed, but his shot lacked power and was comfortably gathered by the South African goalkeeper.

South Africa responded by taking control for several minutes. During this spell, Langeli Fili unleashed a powerful shot from midfield that struck Egypt’s post, narrowly denying South Africa the opening goal.

Egypt was forced into two early substitutions due to injuries, with Omar Osama Hassan and Moamen Sherif making way for Mohamed Abdallah and Saifeldin Essam.

After four minutes of added time, the first half ended goalless. However, Mohamed Abdallah’s second-half strike ultimately secured the important three points for Egypt.
