FIFA Women's World Cup™️ Trophy pays a visit to the Australian Embassy in Rabat

20 March 2023, Rabat
On the occasion of the FIFA Women's World Cup™️ Trophy tour in Morocco, on Monday 20 March, the Australian and New Zealand Embassies to Morocco, in collaboration with the Royal Moroccan Football Foundation (FMRF), and the Fédération Internationale De Football Association (FIFA) organised an event to celebrate women and young girls in sports.
In keeping with the football theme, the event took place in two halves. The first half was a roundtable moderated by Ms Leila Rhiwi, UN Women’s representative in Morocco. The panel also included:
• Ms Bouchra Baibanou, mountaineer, first Moroccan to have climbed Mt Everest.
• Ms Fouzia Madhouni, social entrepreneur, American football coach, and activist.
• Ms Ghizlane Chebbak, international footballer and captain of the Atlas Lionesses.
• Ms Fatima Zahra Tagnaout, Moroccan international footballer who plays for AS FAR.
The second half saw the participation of young girls from the TIBU Africa non-profit organisation (a long-time partner of the embassy and beneficiary of its Direct Aid Program), who took part in football drills and a shootout.
This event, coming just after International Women's Day, was an opportunity for the young girls to meet and be inspired by brilliant women who are leaders and major contributors to women’s sports. The event was part of the official FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™️ Trophy Tour, with Morocco being the sixth stop overall, and the first African stop, on the trophy’s global journey.
During the event, the trophy was also unveiled in the presence of Australia’s Ambassador to Morocco HE. Mr Michael Cutts, along with Ms Kelsie Wilkinson from the Embassy of New Zealand, representatives of the FRMF, and eminent dignitaries of the Moroccan government.
With a view to increasing the participation of women in football, FIFA developed the theme ‘Going Beyond' for its Trophy Tour ahead of the World Cup which will be held in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand from 20 July to 20 August 2023. Morocco will participate at the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time by fielding its national team, the Atlas Lionesses.
Women's empowerment and gender equality continue to be key priorities for the governments of Australia and New Zealand, and the majority of Australia’s direct aid programs in Morocco work towards removing some of the barriers to the participation and development of women and girls. New Zealand is committed to improving gender equality both domestically and internationally and has supported projects in Morocco focused on ensuring girls in rural communities are able to continue education, as well as workshops throughout the country aimed at empowering adolescent girls to become future leaders.
