(Reuters) – Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso said he stopped kneeling before the match this season because his anti-racist gestures were “a little weak”.

Since the league reopened in June last year, players and staff have been kneeling before the kick-off to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Alonso said the other player decided to kneel down and instead emphasize the problem by pointing to the “no racist” badge on the sleeve of the kit.

“I like this method. Of course, I clearly state that I oppose racism and respect everyone,” Alonso said after winning 3-0 in the Premier League on Sunday. Https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/ Sports / chelsea-crush-tottenham-go-joint-top-2021-09-19 at Tottenham Hotspur.

“On the contrary, I think I’m a little weak, so I just prefer this method.”

Chelsea are in the lead after five games. They will host Aston Villa in a League Cup match on Wednesday.
