CAIRO-3 September 2021: Al Ahly defeated Morocco's Widad Smara 29-24 on Thursday to win the African Handball Cup Winners' Cup title.

"We were determined to win the competition despite its difficult time at the start of the season. We missed the international players in the build-up to the competition and they joined the team late. However, all the players did much effort to secure the title." Tarek Mahrous, the team's coach, told the club's official website.

Al Ahly had a fantastic run in the competition and managed to win seven matches out of seven to secure the title in a very important time for the team.

The Red Devils will face their arch-rivals Zamalek in 10 September in the African Super Cup and the winner of the game will represent Africa in the 2021 IHF Men's Super Globe in Saudi Arabia next October.

Al Ahly's goalkeeper Mohamed Essam El Tayar made an important role in the team's triumph and he believes that this victory will help the team ahead of the vital game against Zamalek.

El Tayar said after the game "Winning the title gives the team a huge motivation ahead of the new season. We have big ambitions and we want to win every title this season."

The competition was played between 24 August and 2 September in Meknes, Morocco with the participation of eight teams.
