CAIRO – 8 July 2017: The eighth of July is a good omen for the German national football team. It can be seen as the day that the World Cup was handed to the Germans, and it also marks the day when the Germans smashed the Brazilians at the Maracana Stadium.

The story of Germany’s lucky day goes back to 1990 when they were crowned world champions for the third time in their history after beating Argentina 1-0. The match was going to end in a draw until Andreas Brehme, West Germany’s defender at the time, scored a penalty.

Lothar Matthaus was the only German player to win the best player of the year award. Matthaus was the captain of Germany at the time, and Jurgen Klinsmann was the striker of the team during the final. He later took control of the German team in the 2006 World Cup final where they came in third.

On the same exact day 24 years later, Germany humiliated Brazil by beating them with a 7-1 score in the semi-finals of the World Cup. The Germans had no mercy and completely took control over Brazil from the first to the last minute. The Brazilian team was outplayed in their homeland. Oscar Dos Santos scored the lone goal for Brazil in the last minute.

German striker Mario Gotze, handed the Germans their fourth World Cup trophy after scoring Germany’s only goal in the final against Argentina.

The eighth of July can be seen as a glorious day for the history of German football. That day gave them their last two World Cups.
