CAIRO – 1 July 2017: “Ukrainian travel companies will witness an increase in the number of tourists coming from the Ukrainian market to Sharm el-Sheikh to 10,000 tourists per week, starting next October,” Rami Rizkallah, a member of the Committee to Promote Tourism to Sharm el-Sheikh announced on Saturday.

“The Ukrainian tourist market is one of the most important for the city of Sharm el-Sheikh. Tourism from the country did not stop following the Russian plane crash at the end of October 2015 and contributed to an increased tourist flow with a marked improvement forecast for the coming winter season,” Rizkallah told Egypt Today.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) showed that the number of tourists coming from all over the world to Egypt reached 6,549,000 in March, compared to 4,407,000 tourists during the same month last year, showing an increase of 48.6 percent.

Tourists from Western Europe made up the highest proportion of visitors according to region at 31 percent, with Germany as the most represented country at 43.9 percent. This was followed by the Middle East with 24.6 percent, with Saudi Arabia constituting 37.6 percent of all Middle Eastern visitors. Eastern Europe placed third with 21.6 percent, with a 56.3 percent majority traveling from Ukraine. The percentage of tourists from the rest of the world (Americas, Africa, East Asia, the Pacific, South Asia and other countries) was 21.9 percent.

The number of tourists coming from Arab countries reached 1,979,000 in March 2017, compared to 1,512,000 in March 2016, showing an increase of 30 percent.

Rizkullah pointed out that the aggregate number of nights spent in Egypt by tourists from Arab countries reached 1.7 million in March of this year compared to 9,836,000 during the same month of 2016, showing an increase of 73.3 percent.

The average length of stay of the tourist reached nine nights during this period, compared to an average of only six last year.
