Cairo was founded in 969 CE, encompassing the first Islamic capital of the country, Fustat, which was built in 641. The area on which Cairo was built has been inhabited since the time of ancient Egyptians, especially in Memphis.

More than 20 million people live in Greater Cairo, including Giza and Qalyubia. In order to alleviate pressure on the city, officials have for decades been developing satellite cities.
