CAIRO – 14 January 2021: The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has started the restoration and maintenance of the archaeological Mohammad Ali Bridge in El-Qanater City, Qalyubia Governorate, in coordination with the Ministry of Irrigation and the City Council.

 

Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mustafa Waziri, explained that the Permanent Committee for Islamic Antiquities had agreed that the production unit of the council's projects sector will implement the maintenance works of the bridge under the supervision of El-Qanater Antiquities Zone, at a cost of L.E. 1.6 million , according to the business index approved by the permanent committee.

 

Head of the Islamic and Coptic Antiquities Sector, Osama Talaat, indicated that the project aims to prevent danger that might arise from lack of maintenance  through replacing the damaged stones and all the collapsed parts of the bridge and completing all parts of the missing tiles.

 

For his part, Executive Director of the Production Unit for the Restoration and Maintenance of Antiquities at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Sameh Shenichen, said that the stones will be cleaned and strengthened in all the gates and towers on the bridge, in addition to restoring the wooden doors of the towers, all the antique arches, and iron doors.

 

The bridge lighting system will also be developed, lighting poles will be installed along the bridge, the existing columns will be maintained, the damaged wire will be replaced, and the columns will be painted in the appropriate color.
