CAIRO – 16 July 2020: Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem announced the launch of a translation competition for postgraduate students from the language departments of Egyptian government universities.

The contest will be held under the slogan “Translate, Be Creative” on the website www.targem-eg.com.

Khaled Abdel Ghaffar stated that the competition comes within the framework of the great interest the state attaches to youth in order to support them and develop their skills, urging university students to participate and positively integrate in cultural activities and in society in general, to unleash their creative potential.

Abdel Ghaffar pointed out that the competition aims to shed light on distinguished translation students in Egyptian universities by translating the significant works of leading thinkers and writers from various languages and adding to the Egyptian and Arabic culture and knowledge.

Furthermore, Abdel Ghaffar explained that translation teams of a maximum of five students each will be supervised by translation professors from various language departments, taking advantage of the youth's spare time in a beneficial activity, especially during the summer.

For her part, Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem indicated that cooperation between the two ministries comes as one of the forms of solidarity between state institutions to achieve public benefit, noting that competition aims to give young people distinguished experiences in the field of translation, instill team spirit, and the ability to integrate in a community, gaining the flexibility to adapt, be open to and communicate with others, and enhancing the ability to commit to and achieve goals.

Abdel Dayem added that investing in the potential of youth comes as a way to build and develop societies, explaining that translation is considered one of the most important methods of exchanging scientific and cultural experiences.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has allocated a prize for the winning team of students, a two-week training course in a translation agency abroad. This is sponsored by both Banque Misr and the National Bank of Egypt [NBE].

Also, the Ministry of Culture will publish the winning book among the publications of the National Center for Translation and will present a certificate of appreciation to the winner.

Participating works will be submitted only through the website designated for the contest and for a period of one month from the date that will be announced on the site, adhering to the stated conditions.
