CAIRO – 5 July 2020: Egypt’s Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem mourned Ragaa al-Gedawy, who passed away on June 5, at the age of 82, after her health deteriorated due to contacting the coronavirus.

Abdel Dayem described Gedawy as one of the stars of the beautiful time and a model of classy art. She added that Gedawy succeeded with her upscale sense in creating a distinctive style for the roles she played throughout her extended artistic career, confirming that her work will remain immortal in the memory of Egyptian creativity.

Gedawy is the niece of the late artist Taheyya Kariokka. She received her early education in the Franciscan schools in Cairo. She started her career as a translator in an advertising company.

Gedawy was chosen to be a model after she won the title of Miss Egypt in 1958 and became the most famous Egyptian model. At the same time, she knew her way to art, shifting between cinema and theater.

In the early seventies she married soccer player Hassan Mukhtar and gave birth to one daughter. She participated in many successful works as well as a number of famous TV and radio programs.
