CAIRO – 25 June 2017: Great Egyptian poet Gamal Bekheet is writing his first novel, he announced on Facebook on Saturday.

Bekheet’s statement comes as a surprise to friends and followers who cannot imagine Bekheet a novelist for the first time.

“My dear friends on the time-consuming machine named Facebook, I’d like to tell you I am currently on a short or perhaps long vacation depending on when I will manage to finish my first novel, as I have only finished half of it. Today I will continue writing my novel about love and singing. At a time love is becoming extremely rare and singing has receded, may Egypt always stay in peace. May you dear friends be always happy and cheerful,’’ posted Bekheet on his Facebook account.

Bekheet is an Egyptian poet born on Jan. 29, 1954. He graduated from the Faculty of Media and Communications in 1979. The Egyptian Radio chose Bekeet four times to write songs for the Arab Song Competition organized by the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) of the League of Arab States.

Bekheet used his poems as a weapon against inheritance, poverty and corruption during the reign of former President Hosni Mubarak. Among his most famous poems are "El Wad Kebr" (“The Boy has Come of Age”) and "Deen Abohom" (“Damn Them”).

Egyptian Radio chose Bekheet’s song ‘’Watan Araby’’ (“Arab Homeland”) for the Arab Song Competition which was held in Damascus on June 16, 2005. The music of the song was composed by Farouk El-Sharnouby, distributed by Yehia El-Mogy and sung by Mohamed El Helew. “Watan Araby” was awarded first prize.

Behkeet is the former editor-in-chief of Sabah Elkheir magazine.
