CAIRO – 20 June 2017: Ministry of Antiquities is mulling the installation of renewable energy solar power in the new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in addition to discussing ways of transporting heavy antiquities from Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square to GEM, according to general supervisor for GEM project Tarek Tawfik.

GEM board of directors met Sunday headed by Minister of Antiques Khaled El-Enany, to discuss the latest updates concerning work in the museum, and set the upcoming work plan to prepare for the soft opening, Tawfik added.

“We discussed the work flow according to the agreed time table in order to be prepared for the partial opening in April 2018,” he said.

GEM is situated only 2 kilometers away from the ancient Pyramids of Giza. It will be built on a plot of land approximately 117 feddans, about 480,000 square meters.

The new museum will pay homage to permanent Ancient Egyptian monuments, treasures, and history. It will house over 100,000 artifacts. Of the 100,000 artifacts about 3,500 belong to the famous King Tutankhamun, according to GEM official website.
