12th edition of musical Hayy Festival to kickoff in Ramadan

CAIRO - 31 May 2017: El-Genaina Theater Company will be hosting the 12th edition of Hayy Festival, which will run between June 4 to June 14 at El-Genaina Theater located at Al-Azhar Park.

The festival’s opening, starting on June 4, will feature Egyptian instrumental music band Dokkan who will stage El-Genaina Theater with a fusion of contemporary music and traditional Egyptian music.

The opening will also feature a performance by Libyan Musician Nasser El-Mezdawi who has been composing music since 1970 for pop artists such as Amr Diab and Hamid el-Shaary. Mezdawi is known for blending Arab, Berber, African, and European music according El-Genaina Theater official page.

Hayy Festival’s second event on June 6 will feature Looperia, a band known for depicting love and peace within their music performances through playing African music, Ganawa, music, and Sufi. Another performance that will stage the theater that day is by Algerian composer and singer Sidi Bemole who is known for playing many genres including Rock, Berber, and Celtic music. Releasing 10 albums until this day, Bemole sings in French, English, Arabic, and Berber.

Performing songs portraying personal experiences, Shahira Kamal’s band will stage El-Genaina Theater on June 11 to entertain audiences while also maintaining a story-telling pace presenting philosophical paradoxes and social issues through their lyrics. Tunisian folk artist Haydar Hamdi will also be performing music depicting struggles in his country among other issues.

El-Genaina Theater Company will be concluding Hayy Festival on June 14 with jazz band Aqsa Al Wasat and Malika Zarra who is famous for fusing soul, jazz, and North African tunes. Zarra sings in several languages including French, English, Moroccan Arabic, and Berber.

All concerts start at 9:30 pm.
