CAIRO – 16 October 2018: The first edition of Arab Lit granted the Best Short Story Award to Egyptian writer Muhammad Abdel Nabi for his short story “Kesetena” (Our Story).

“Kesetna” was translated into English by Robin Moger. The award which amounts to $250,000 was divided between Abdel Nabi and Moger.

“Kesetna” was published in 2014 as part of Abdel Nabi’s collection entitled “As the Torrent Carries Away a Sleeping Village” published by Merit Publishing House. In 2015, the collection was granted the Best Short-Story Collection Award at the Cairo International Book Fair.

The jury members were translators Thoraya el-Rayyes, and novelists Ruqaya Izzidien, and Ma’n Abu Taleb.

"'Kesetna' is a charming, meticulously crafted tale that explores through metaphor what it means to exist at the margins of an increasingly interconnected, voyeuristic world. The author’s impressive control of tone and pace creates a haunting, playful effect which gives this story its unique, compelling voice. Robin Moger’s translation captures the mood and rhythms of the original in elegant, fluent prose.

The translator succeeds wonderfully at reproducing the distinctive narrative voice of the story with inspired, inventive phrasing," Rayyes said.
